Guest sentiment
A snapshot of what local diners frequently mention about this location.
"Been going to Awah for several years now. Exceptional bidayuh style cooking. Slightly hidden however it truly is a hidden gem here in Kuching. Highly recommended"
"When in Kuching, you have to try the native food. We had: - Umai: local fishermen’s ceviche - Midin: wild jungle fern - Tipuyak Goreng Oyou: fried fermented durian with pork - Tikasuom Dowon Banuok: fried fermented tapioca leaves - Chicken soup cooked in bamboo - Tuak: native rice wine The fermented durian was really intense and goes really well with the pork!"
"My go to place for foreign visitors or when you need your Sarawakian food cravings satisfied. The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable of the dishes. Nice ambience and easy to find. Will definitely come back again."
"My favorite restaurant in Kuching. Order upfront, kitchen closes at 8plus...? 1. Oyuo Panggang (BBQ Pork) - arguably better than siu yuk. Crunchy skin, tender meat. Must order. Book to avoid disappointment. 2. Tikasuom Dowon Banuok (Fried Fermented Tapioca Leaves) - 3. Oyuo Tiyung Dayak (Golden Brinjal Pork) - OK lah. They use pork belly. Would be happier if they use smoked pork. 4. Kuduos Dowon Timun (Cucumber Leaves) - cant find this anywhere else 5. Umai Ikien - sour, tangy, fish w good texture (salivating thinking about this) 6. Tipuyak goreng (Fermented durian) - strong, robust, heavy. How else to describe? 7. Mani chai - OK lah. 8. Tuak Raisin Ice Cream - goooooood. But Rm15 per portion Camel beer available at RM4"
"Better Local Cuisine in town. More flavourful and tasty. But ambience can be improved. They do have pork also. As for the ice cream, they got it from other supplier. The tuak ice cream is interesting, other flavour has room of improvement."
"We stumbled upon this place looking for Bidayuh dishes - and I could say is the highlight of my trip - the flavours were totally mind blowing We came here twice to try out the different dishes of cooking the fermented durian (tipuyak goreng) - we tried both the pork & ikan bills and both were equally good!! The fragrance of durian blends very well with the dishes. It’s quite a heavy flavour and salty so it’s best to order only one and eat with white rice :D We are also super in love with the catfish fermented durian soup (sup ikien boku tipuyak), the flavours are sweet and mild, it’s especially soothing to drink this after eating the tipuyak goreng!! ↕↕ Goreng Bo’doh is the fried kolok noodles that is full of wokhei (heat from wok) and really delicious - fried rice is great too!!!! I will definitely come back again next time."
"Food at good portion and decent. Drink is average. Visited around 11am(Saturday), not much people. Dinner time have more people, and saw that they cater for weddings too. Friendly waiters too."
"The tribal cuisine here is definitely delicious and eye opening for the uninitiated. Give the ikan bilis tempoyak a go and it could be addictively life changing. The fact that it's a bit out of the city center and even local families come for dinner causally says alot about it's authenticity. Even with a large menu and variety the staff are fully knowledgeable of the nuances. I was sincerely impressed. Sadly the cat ended shift early today and went home. "
